And activating the hero within.

Chronic sadness is more than an occasional bout of “the blues.” It’s an invisible disability as it’s internal and immobilizes us from moving forward in our lives. Many people who suffer from this common affliction have a family history of what I call “blue genes,” -or depression that’s weaved into our DNA.

The good news?

I’ve discovered some handy “mental floss” techniques that work to dislodge the knot of sadness that sometimes gets stuck in the center of my psyche; afterward, I’m motivated, happy, and on the path to living my best life.

These simple methods work wonders for me, and I hope they can help you too.

It works like this:

Whenever I sense my emotions are “headed south,” instead of mentally beating myself up, I remember that there is no good without bad, no light without shadows, and the following truths:

That Personal Sadness:

  1. Reminds us of the fragility of life. The deep despair we feel when a loved one dies is a stark reminder of the swift passage of time and why we’re far more loving and affectionate towards others immediately after the death, at least for a while.
  2. Connects us to our humanity. Imagine if the sun shone 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year — nothing but happy, warm sunshine all day every day. It sounds fantastic until you realize that too much sun creates a desert. Rain, like sadness, is necessary for growth.
  3. It makes us more empathetic to the plight of others. Instead of judging someone who lashes out for no apparent reason or dismissing their constant complaints as someone who’s hopelessly cranky, we realize there’s always more than meets the eye. We understand and hear the silent language of sadness. Thus we endeavor to stop the suffering by offering what we desire in our time of need — an understanding friend.

You see, the superpower of personal sadness is EMPATHY and treating others with the same care and compassion that we crave. What we give to others, we get back ten-fold. That’s the key to activating the hero within.
